After the first forecasts for the state elections in Saxony and Thuringia, Left Party leader Martin Schirdewan spoke on the television channel Phoenix of a “bitter election evening in many respects”. “This is the first time since World War II that a fundamentally fascist party has won the majority in a federal state,” the Left Party leader commented on the election results in Thuringia. The Left Party is also experiencing “a bitter evening”. There are shifts in the party system that are “extremely worrying”.
In Thuringia, the CDU must now consider how it wants to form a majority. “The incompatibility resolution is out of date,” said Schirdewan, who was open to new majorities. The Union must accept the new social realities of the election results. In both federal states, the Left Party has been “weakened by this right-wing split that has developed from our party,” said Schirdewan, assessing the election results. Sahra Wagenknecht’s party has not succeeded in implementing its promise to weaken the AfD. “Quite the opposite. The BSW is a gift for the AfD.”
