Each August 13th is commemorated International Left-Handers Day and the date has its origins in the initiative of two world organizations: Lefthanders International, Inc. and The Left-Handers Club, which work for the inclusion of people who have more facilities with the left hand.

The day attempts to raise awareness about the shortcomings that still exist in everyday life and represent difficulties for this group of people which, according to the most recent studies, affects more than 790 million people worldwide.

Left-Handed People’s Day aims to make visible the difficulties of people with this condition

This number indicates that only 1 in 10 people on the planet is left-handed, and the data corresponds to a higher percentage of men than women that respond to this minority phenotype of the human species.

It should be noted that this statistical data varies according to the different regions and countries of the world in which the sample is taken. In addition, the number depends on the historical period and the social conventions of each geographical area, since in many places this condition was not easily accepted.

Various studies on the subject have shown that be left-handed is related to a component of human DNA and that this particularity is also usually linked to having better language skills.

On August 13, 1975, the American military Dean R. Campbell decided to found Lefthanders International, Inc., with the aim of including left-handed people and the following year proposed the Left-Handed Day, which continued and is currently still celebrated throughout the world.

Another fact that reinforces the creation of this particular date is located in the year 1990, when the The Left-Handers Club (name that could be translated as The Left-Handers Club), a group whose objectives include informing its members about new developments that arise for this population group. This entity also claims to have created this very special date.

Beyond the authorship, both organizations are focused on making visible the problems left-handed people face in a world mostly designed for right-handed people.

The world’s left-handed population is approaching 800 million

The countries with the largest number of people who primarily use their left hand are Netherlands (13,23%), USA (13,2%), Belgium (13,1%), Canada (12,8%), United Kingdom (12,24%), Ireland (11,65%) y Swiss (11,61%).

Meanwhile, countries with a low rate of left handed people It may be related to the characteristics of their society, the lack of acceptance towards this group of people or the impositions in the educational system which forced left-handed people to learn to write with their right hand, despite their innate condition.
