“Lee. On My Own Eyes” – premiere with many Polish accents!

From Friday, September 13, in Polish cinemas we will be able to watch a film about the model, photographer and war correspondent for Vogue magazine – Lee Miller, who became an eyewitness to the nightmare of concentration camps.

The action of the film entitled “Lee. With My Own Eyes” begins in 1938. In the title role we will see the famous Kate Winslet. She is also the producer of the film. On the screen we will also see Alexander Skarsgård, Marion Cotillard and Andy Samberg. The director of the production is Ellen Kuras. And in the context of her person we can start talking about Polish accents in this film!

Ellen Kuras’s grandparents (or rather Kuraś – that was the family name) came from the Podkarpacie region: her grandmother was born near Tarnów, her grandfather came from the vicinity of Rzeszów. They both emigrated to the USA. Why? It is not known exactly. One day she informed her mother that she was leaving for America. He probably left for work. Despite missing their homeland, among other reasons due to the political changes in Poland, they decided not to return.

The future director of the film “Lee. Na swoim oczy” was planning to return to Poland to study at the Film School in Łódź, but the situation at the time prevented her from doing so. It was 1981. Martial law. I guess there is no need to explain more. Studying at the Łódź Film School would certainly have allowed Ellen Kuras to learn the language of her ancestors better. Unfortunately, the director can only say a few phrases in Polish, such as “dzień dobry”, “idź moja” or… “niedostytucznie”. However, this does not prevent Ellen Kuras from feeling Polish!

Director Ellen Kuras and cinematographer Paweł Edelman

But that’s not all! The film “Lee. With My Own Eyes” would not have been made if not for a Pole with a truly recognized name in the film community. This is about the famous cinematographer Paweł Edelman, known for his cooperation with Andrzej Wajda.. Ellen Kuras had already thought about making a film with this award-winning Polish cameraman. They found common ground from the start. Kuras appreciates his sensitivity, calling him “her Polish brother”. The result of this collaboration was bound to be an outstanding production. Have we managed to convince you? See you in cinemas!
