-Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong (53, photo) was sentenced to two years and six months in prison at a farewell trial for the destruction of the Gukjeong Nongdan case and was imprisoned in court. The Seoul High Court Criminal Division 1 (deputy judge Jung Joon-young) sentenced Vice-Chairman Lee, who was charged with bribing former President Park Geun-hye (69, incarcerated) and Choi Soon-sil (65, incarcerated), to two years and six months in prison.
Earlier, in 2019, the Supreme Court alliance recognized an additional 5 billion won as a bribe, including 3.4 billion won for the purchase of three horses that Lee handed over to Choi and 1.6 billion won for the Korea Winter Sports Gifted Center. Unlike the appeal trial, where only 3.6 billion won in horseback riding assistance was recognized as a bribe, a total of 8.6 billion won was judged as a bribe and repatriated for guilty purposes.
The Destruction and Return Trial, which has to follow the Supreme Court’s judgment of guilt as it is, did not reflect it in the sentencing factor, saying that it is difficult to say that Samsung’s compliance monitoring system met the effective standards. The judge said, “Samsung’s Compliance Committee does not seem to be able to preemptively monitor new behaviors that may occur in the future.” However, he sentenced him to a lower sentence than the recommended sentence of sentencing (4 to 10 years and 2 months in jail), saying, “If the President asks for a bribe, it is very difficult to refuse it.” Vice-Chairman Lee’s defense team expressed regret to the court, and Special Prosecutor Park Young-soo put forward a position that “a sentence taking into account the purpose of the Supreme Court ruling.” Vice-Chairman Lee was arrested for special prosecution and had already been imprisoned for 353 days before being released from the appeals court. If the sentence is finalized and the sentence is finalized, the person will be imprisoned for about 1 year and 6 months. However, if the sentence is confirmed, you may be subject to a special pardon even if you are in jail.
