The previous day, the Ministry of Justice submitted to the National Assembly a request for consent to the arrest of CEO Lee, who was requested for an arrest warrant for alleged corruption in the development of Wirye and Daejang-dong and donations to Seongnam FC. The Ministry of Justice sent the request for consent to the arrest of Lee, which the Seoul Central District Court submitted to the prosecution on the 17th, to the National Assembly after receiving the approval of President Yoon.
Representative Lee, who is an incumbent member of the National Assembly, has the privilege of not being arrested or detained without the consent of the National Assembly during the session.
Therefore, only when the motion for arrest is passed in the National Assembly can the court hold an interrogation (examination of the warrant) of the suspect before arrest.
After receiving the request, the Speaker of the National Assembly must report it at the first plenary session, hold a plenary session ‘within 72 hours after 24 hours’, and put it to an anonymous vote.
The ruling and opposition parties agreed to hold plenary sessions on the 24th and 27th. Accordingly, after the motion for arrest is reported to the National Assembly on the 24th, it is expected to be put to a vote on the 27th.
The consent motion for arrest shall be passed if the majority of the present and present members agree to it.
The Democratic Party holds a majority of 169 seats in the National Assembly. Since it is a vote to determine the party representative’s new recruit, the prospect that the arrest motion will be rejected is prevailing, with most voting against it.
If the arrest motion is rejected, the arrest warrant will be dismissed without reviewing the warrant, and if that happens, the prosecution is likely to prosecute Lee without detention.
