Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, said on the 5th that he would maintain the current ‘linked election system’ and create a proportional satellite party regarding the election system. As in the last general election, the Democratic Party plans to submit only local candidates and create a separate satellite party to submit proportional candidates.
Representative Lee held an ‘emergency press conference’ in Gwangju this morning and announced his position on the election system. Representative Lee said, “The Democratic Party must choose between returning to a parallel system for each region or preparing countermeasures against the ruling party’s foul play in the semi-linked system,” and added, “I will find a path to victory within the semi-linked system, not a return to the past.” At the same time, he said, “I will prepare an integrated proportional party that will make use of the purpose of the quasi-linkage system while responding to satellite party foul play with all forces that agree with the judgment of the regime and the advancement of history.” In order to respond to the People Power Party’s ‘satellite party foul play’, the Democratic Party is also planning to create a satellite party.
During the last presidential election, Representative Lee apologized for creating a satellite political party during the general election four years ago. He made ‘banning satellite political parties’ as a presidential election pledge. Regarding breaking his promise to hold the presidential election that day, Representative Lee said, “I apologize for ultimately creating a quasi-satellite party.”
Representative Lee said, “In response to public demands to ban satellite political parties, the Democratic Party tried to legislate to ban satellite political parties, but failed due to opposition from the ruling party.” He added, “If one of the two major parties creates a satellite political party, the other party will fight back unless they are prepared to be defeated.” There is no choice but to do so. He said, “He is attacking me with a knife, but I can’t fight him with my bare fists.” Since the People Power Party created a satellite party, the Democratic Party cannot suffer a loss by giving up on the satellite party.
Representative Lee said, “The ruling party, which rejected the law banning satellite political parties, is already trying to steal the general election victory by creating a satellite party,” and added, “Unfortunately, there is no way to stop the ruling party’s satellite parties.” He said, “With a scholar’s critical awareness and a merchant’s sense of reality, I will pursue ideals but acknowledge reality.”

Representative Lee said, “The task of this general election is clear,” and “We must judge the incompetent, incompetent, and irresponsible Yoon Seok-yeol administration.” He went on to say, “The National Assembly, which monitors state affairs and creates and changes the national law and order, is the last bastion of a democratic republic.” He once again emphasized that the creation of a satellite party was an inevitable choice in order to avoid handing over the National Assembly to the ruling party.
Previously, the Democratic Party decided to entrust Representative Lee with the right to decide on the party line regarding the election system at the Supreme Committee meeting on the 2nd. All authority held by the top committee members was delegated to Representative Lee.
The Democratic Party has been delaying its decision on whether to maintain the current ‘linked election system’, in which the number of proportional elected candidates decreases as more elected candidates come out of the district, or whether to return to the past parallel electoral system in which district and proportional electors were elected separately. The current linked election system is a system that the Democratic Party pushed through four years ago despite opposition from the People Power Party. However, ahead of this general election, the Democratic Party has been considering whether to change the electoral system as it appears that it will lose seats if it maintains the current system.
Within the Democratic Party, there was an opinion that Representative Lee would choose the ‘parallel type’ to avoid losing seats. However, Representative Lee chose to create a ‘satellite party’ to maintain the current system and avoid losing seats. A Democratic Party official said, “There was a lot of opposition within the party to the parallel regression, and it seems to have taken into account the fact that opposition minority parties such as the Justice Party, the Basic Income Party, and the Progressive Party also strongly opposed the parallel regression.”
