There is a new Olympic champion in the 200 meter freestyle. After her brilliant 400 meter freestyle victory, Ariarne Titmus triumphed over half the distance and won her second Olympic gold. The expected duel between Titmus and Katie Ledecky did not materialize, however, the Rio 2016 winner could not have a say about the medals and finished fifth.
After the start, Siobhan Haughey (Hong Kong), Penny Oleksiak (Canada) and Junxuan Yang (China) took the lead, turning under a world record split after 100 meters. Titmus was fourth halfway through the race but had the better stamina. With the fastest second 100, the Australian pushed past the field and hit 4.2 tenths ahead of Haughey (1: 53.92 minutes) after 1: 53.50 minutes. Oleksiak secured bronze (1: 54.70 minutes) ahead of Yang. Federica Pellegrini swam to seventh place in her fifth Olympic final in 1: 55.91 minutes.
