A lecture that was supposed to take place this Sunday in the Camp Westerbork Remembrance Center has been canceled due to threats. One of the speakers at that lecture, Wahhab Hassoo, says that the lecture will not take place due to threats to him and his family. “The safety risks for those present at the lecture have also been taken into account in this consideration,” he writes X.

The Remembrance Center confirms opposite RTV Drenthe that “personal threats” have been made against Hassoo. “That is why the lecture has been canceled and we find that very annoying. The choice was made in consultation,” a spokesperson told the regional broadcaster. For security reasons, the nature of the threats has not been disclosed.

Hasso would speak at the Remembrance Center about the Yazidis, an ethnic and religious minority in Kurdistan that fell victim to genocide under the terrorist movement IS. He would speak together with the Jewish Emmy Drop-Menko, whose family was murdered by the Nazis and who has been lecturing on the Holocaust and anti-Semitism for years.

‘Painful reality’

Hassoo calls it disappointing that the lecture in the center near the former transit camp to concentration and extermination camps is cancelled. “But the safety and well-being of Emmy and the public are my top priority. Emmy and I hope that there will be other opportunities to share our story in the future. I never and never thought I would experience this in the Netherlands. make it a painful reality.”
