A tragic event brings mourning to the Department’s passenger carrier union. Óscar Machado, a “professional driver” from the Rápido Tolima company, died in an unfortunate road accident. The driver traveled the Bogotá-Medellín route.
Óscar Machado, known among transporters as ‘Lechero’ or ‘Lecherito’ left Bogotá for the capital of Antioquia driving a ‘mega duo’ type vehicle from the company Rápido Tolima.
On the road to Guaduas, at kilometer 73+730 meters, according to a report delivered by the official fire brigade, the interdepartmental bus had a failure in the braking system and the accident occurred.
The bus was left on the side of the road, after its front end hit a ravine. Unfortunately, the one who suffered the most was Machado, because after suffering a strong impact following the collision, he lost his life. ‘Lechero’ was trapped in the car bins.
Rescue agencies indicated that the only deceased person who left the accident was the driver of the vehicle.
A passenger, identified as Alejandra Castro, told a city radio station that from the Bogotá exit, the driver was driving slowly. The woman assured that it is very likely that “Lechero” guessed that there was a mechanical failure in the vehicle.
The female passenger said that she was asleep at the time of the accident and that the strong impact woke her up, as she received severe blows to her nose and mouth.
He also indicated that after the accident, general panic reigned among the people who were on board the bus and that at least 30 people were injured, many of whom reportedly suffered more complex bruises and fractures.
The wounded were urgently sent to medical assistance centers in Sasaima and Bogotá, depending on the severity of their injuries.
Friends and people close to the driver, as well as members of the transport union, deplored the fact and extolled the valor of Óscar Machado, who they said managed to save the lives of his passengers, at his own expense.
At the end of this edition, an official statement of the event from the authorities was expected.
