LeBron James has a reputation for being close enough to his pennies for everyday things, in contrast to his charitable investment and generosity. Dwyane Wade and other longtime comrades of the King were often amused by his stingy side. LeBron himself had explained at the time of the announcement of the upcoming obligation to pay to maintain his certification on Twitter: “If you know me well, you know I’m definitely not going to pay for this”.
On April 20, this week, the social network now owned by Elon Musk, ended the free blue dot system which ensured the absence of identity theft. Many were surprised to see that LeBron James still had his blue badge, which meant that he had agreed to pay 8 euros per month to keep it. Except that the Los Angeles Lakers superstar did not suddenly change his mind, contrary to what Internet users suggested, criticizing this turnaround.
Elon Musk, anxious not to lose the presence of multimillionaire accounts in followers, like that of LeBron, confessed to having paid out of pocket for the subscription of certain accounts, in particular that of LeBron James … LeBron knew absolutely nothing about it and therefore did not knowingly side with the South African tycoon.
What is annoying is that when you click on the blue dot in question, it is indicated that the account holder has paid for his subscription. Musk obviously didn’t make any edits so people would think the celebrities involved with this boost are donating money to Twitter and would do well to follow suit.
It’s all good, LeBron is still stingy, and in this case, that’s probably a good thing.
Just Shatner, LeBron and King
