LeBron James and his new number change: from 6 to 23
LeBron James (38) will once again wear the number 23 on his Lakers jersey, leaving behind the 6 that he has worn for the last two years. There is a reason for this and he has to do with the late Bill Russell.
When the Celtics legend passed away in July 2022, the NBA, in his honor, decided that no other player, in any other franchise, could ever pick and wear number 6 again. There was only one exception, those who wore it. they had previously.
LeBron James, who has played with 23 and 6 throughout his career, wore the latter number before saying goodbye to Bill Russell. He is the one he wore in his time with the Heat and he wanted to recover it on 21/22. And when the mythical center passed away and the league decided to withdraw the number, he decided to keep it for one more season as a particular tribute from him to another legend.
Once the 22/23 season is over, his decision has been to return to his number 23, the one he always wore in Cleveland and in his first three years in Los Angeles.
