Premiere in the NBA: LeBron James active together with his son
LeBron James and his son LeBron James Jr. made NBA history together. The two were the first father-son duo to be on the field together in the Los Angeles Lakers’ friendly against the Phoenix Suns. For LeBron James it was the first minutes of preparation in the 114:118 in Palm Desert; his son, known as Bronny, made his first appearance for the Lakers on Friday. Bronny turned 20 on Sunday. His father is entering the 22nd season of his career and will celebrate his 40th birthday in December. LeBron James scored 19 points, his son missed his only attempt.
The list of father-son duos in US professional sports is short. In baseball, Ken Griffey Sr. and Ken Griffey Jr. did it for the Seattle Mariners in the early 1990s. In ice hockey, Gordie Howe played with his sons Marty and Mark on a team for both the Houston Aeros and the Hartford Whalers in the late 1970s.
Longest touchdown of the season not enough for Seahawks
The longest touchdown of the NFL season over 99 yards was not enough for the Seattle Seahawks. Against the New York Giants, Rayshawn Jenkins grabbed a dropped ball and carried it across the entire field into the end zone, but the 20:29 defeat could not prevent this early lead. And that was also because the Giants scored in a spectacular way: When the Seahawks wanted to score a field goal to make it 23:23 shortly before the end, the Giants blocked the attempt and escaped with the football into the other end zone.
Stuttgart’s Jakob Johnson was not in the squad for the game, which gave the Giants only their second win of the season – and Seattle, after three wins at the start, already their second defeat in a row. “You have to give the Giants credit that they were better than us today,” Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said.
Commanders get their fourth win in a row
The Washington Commanders now have four wins from five games and won the home game against the Cleveland Browns 34:14. The team, with the German Brandon Coleman in an important role as protector of quarterback Jayden Daniels, has now won four games in a row and is as good as it was at this point in the season in 2008.
The fans in Cincinnati saw the most turbulent game of the game day in their Bengals’ 38:41 defeat against the Baltimore Ravens. Joe Burrow had a strong performance with five touchdown passes, as did his teammate Ja’Marr Chase, who scored two touchdowns and caught passes for a total of 193 yards. The fact that the Bengals still lost for the fourth time in five games was due to Lamar Jackson on the other side. The quarterback led his team to its third win of the season with four touchdown passes.
The late game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Dallas Cowboys started more than an hour and a half late due to strong thunderstorms in Pittsburgh. When the Cowboys’ 20:17 was perfect, it was already 1:00 a.m. in Pittsburgh. It was the Steelers’ second loss of the season.
Fiebich and Sabally are in the WNBA finals
Leonie Fiebich and Nyara Sabally are reaching for the title with New York Liberty in the US professional basketball league WNBA. In the fourth semi-final, the team around the two German national players used the second match point to reach the final with a 76:62 win over defending champions Las Vegas Aces. Last year, New York lost the final series against Las Vegas 1:3, now the semifinals (best of five) went to Liberty 3:1.
In the final, the team from the Big Apple will face the Minnesota Lynx or Connecticut Sun. The series is 2:2. Connecticut tied the score 92-82. The decisive fifth game takes place on Wednesday night.
Fiebich was hit with three fouls early on Sunday, but didn’t let that bother him. In the end, the 24-year-old had eleven points and seven rebounds in just over 28 minutes of play. As was the case recently, Sabally was not used. The top scorer for the runner-up was Sabrina Ionescu with 22 points, while superstar Breanna Stewart achieved a double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds.
Most recently, newcomer Fiebich was elected to the All-Rookie team, and now the big hit awaits. WNBA founding member New York is still waiting for its first title.
