Lebanon’s Reluctance Towards War with Israel and Pressure on Hezbollah Leader

Especially in Lebanon, they are not immediately keen on a war. Many think back with fear to the war that Hezbollah fought with Israel in 2006. The country is going through a serious economic crisis. This causes dissatisfaction among the population, causing Hezbollah, the important militant group active in southern Lebanon (and supported by Iran), to lose enormous popularity in recent years. Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, is therefore under immense pressure not to become involved in the war with Israel.

Moreover, a war with Israel could also mean that the US decides to attack Hezbollah, and the militant group knows that it may not be able to survive a direct encounter with the Americans. The Hezbollah CEO may have spoken harshly after the drone attack in Beirut, but the chance that action will be taken is small.
