Shocking are the satellite images of villages in southern Lebanon that have been almost wiped off the map since Israel’s attacks with Hezbollah began, due to attacks by the Israeli army and air force.
The tiny village of Ramyah in southern Lebanon has almost disappeared. In a neighboring village, satellite images show a similar scene: a hill once covered with houses, now turned into a place full of rubble.

Specifically, using satellite imagery provided by Planet Labs PBC, The Associated Press identified a series of 11 villages – all within 4 miles (6.5 kilometers) of Lebanon’s border with Israel – that were severely damaged in the past month , either from blows or from explosives.

According to Corey Scher of the City University of New York and Jamon Van Der Hoek of Oregon State University, the heaviest damage in the south occurred in villages closer to the border, with 100 to 500 buildings destroyed or damaged damages.
In the village of Ramyah, just one building still stands on the village’s central hilltop, after a controlled explosion by Israeli soldiers. In the town of Aita al-Shaab – a village with a strong Hezbollah influence – everything is now gray with rubble.
Israeli warplanes and ground forces have been leaving their devastating marks in southern Lebanon since last month. The goal, Israel says, is to wear down the Hezbollah militant group, push it back from the border and end its fire in northern Israel.
Even UN peacekeepers and Lebanese troops in the south have come under fire from Israeli forces, raising questions about whether they can stay in place.
