Lebanon to Submit Formal Protest to UN Security Council Over Israeli Airstrikes

BEIRUT – Lebanon will submit a formal protest to the UN Security Council over the willful Israeli aggression that occurred Friday morning (7/4/2023).

The move was announced by the Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu), according to a report by Anadolu Agency.

The Lebanese Foreign Ministry said Israel had violated Lebanese sovereignty by bombing areas in southern Lebanon.

“Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Abdallah Bou Habib instructed the Permanent Envoy of Lebanon to the United Nations in New York to submit a formal complaint to the United Nations Security Council regarding the impact of the Israeli bombing and deliberate aggression at dawn today (Friday) on areas in southern Lebanon,” the statement said. Lebanon called the Israeli aggression a “flagrant violation of Lebanese sovereignty and a flagrant violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701… (which) threatens the stability that south Lebanon once enjoyed.”

UN Security Council Resolution 1701 calls for a complete cessation of hostilities and Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon.

Early Friday, the Israeli military launched airstrikes in Lebanon hours after striking the Gaza Strip.

Israel says it attacked targets belonging to the Palestinian resistance group Hamas in southern Lebanon.
