At least six people were killed after an Israeli airstrike on Wednesday 10/16 in the headquarters of the municipality of Nabatiya, a large city in southern Lebanon.
Among the victims was the mayor of the area, Ahmad Khalil, who Reuters said was at a meeting of the local crisis response committee to coordinate aid to those affected by the war.
Israel launched “11 strikes against Nabatiyya and its environs,” considered a stronghold of Hezbollah and its ally, the Amal movement, district head Howaida Turk said.
The strike injured 43 people with Turkey speaking of a “ring of fire” in the city of southern Lebanon, whose shopping center was hit on Saturday 12/10 by the Israeli Air Force.
At least two municipal buildings were hit, as well as a nearby medical center, Turk and a Hezbollah rescue official told AFP.
The official ANI news agency added that a building housing a library and a shopping center were also targeted.
The Lebanese civil protection service, for its part, announced the death of one of its members who was in the administrative complex.
Following these strikes, UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Janine Hennis-Plaschert called for continued protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure.
“This attack follows other incidents in which civilians and civilian infrastructure have been targeted across Lebanon … violations of international humanitarian law are completely unacceptable,” she said in a statement.
Earlier, Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati denounced a “deliberate” Israeli strike on Nabatieh’s “municipal council” which was meeting to “review the humanitarian situation and the state of services in the city”.
For its part, the Israeli Air Force said it “struck dozens of Hezbollah terrorist targets in the Nabatiya district,” which include “terrorist infrastructure sites, Hezbollah command centers, and weapons storage sites, which were installed by Hezbollah next to non- military infrastructure”.
Since Israel began turning Lebanon into a new Gaza on September 23, at least 1,356 people have been killed in the country, according to an AFP tally based on official figures.
