Lebanon renews call to implement International Resolution 1701 – 2024-10-08 01:08:04

Lebanon’s interim Prime Minister Najib Mikati renewed the demand to fully implement International Resolution 1701 to stop the war and force Israel to end its aggressions and repeated violations.

In an interview with the British channel Sky News, in Arabic, the head of the Lebanese government highlighted that the failure to implement the international call, agreed by 10 countries for a 21-day ceasefire, undermines the credibility of these nations.

According to Mikati, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has no respect for the international community.

The highest authority of the Executive reiterated Lebanon’s position of resorting to a diplomatic solution to avoid more killings and destruction.

By demanding the full implementation of Resolution 1701, he demanded to begin by stopping Israeli aggression and repeated violations of Lebanese sovereignty.

For the head of the Government, the way to the security of the region lies in applying 1701, which leads to full cooperation between the Army and the United Nations Interim Force (Unifil).

At this point, he indicated that the President of Parliament, Nabih Berri, maintains the necessary contacts, and “we can say that if the ceasefire is respected by Israel, so will Lebanon.”

Mikati noted that the Army is ready to strengthen its position in terms of numbers immediately, “but it does not have the necessary equipment, so it requires some time to strengthen it.”

We do not want violence or war, but permanent stability in southern Lebanon and the return of the displaced to their homes, he said.

In the prime minister’s opinion, the current moment demands a diplomatic solution, and he added that the aid necessary to relieve refugees began to be distributed.

More than two thousand citizens dead and nearly 10,000 injured is the balance so far of the Israeli bombings against the southern suburb of Beirut, southern towns and northeastern Lebanon since October 2023.

Israel escalated violence against the country in mid-September, and under the pretext of targeting military targets it bombs residential buildings and massacres children, women and health personnel.
