Lebanon Presidential Elections Stalled by International Diplomatic Efforts

Member of the “Strong Republic” bloc, Representative Ghayath Yazbek, expressed his appreciation for “the dynamism that characterizes the work of the five ambassadors in the presidential file, which clashes with the rigid positions of some local parties,” noting that “the ambassadors are trying to market or institutionalize the third option, but they have collided and will collide.” With the position of the Shiite duo, expressed by Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, who confirmed adherence to the option of nominating the head of the “Marada Movement,” Suleiman Franjieh.

He confirmed, in a press interview, that “adhering to the option of nominating Franjieh brings the efforts of the quintet back to the previous stage, when the French presidential envoy, Jean-Yves Le Drian, sought, in every visit to Beirut, to move the presidential file, but all his attempts failed due to the insistence on “This nomination.”

Regarding whether the ambassadors’ movement will remain without results, Yazbek considered that “it is too early to pass judgment on this movement, but from the positions and atmosphere that were conveyed in the past hours, the presidential election is still taking place in the same vicious circle, which is capable of aborting any attempt to hold a vote.” Presidential elections, although there will be no saving situation for Lebanon without electing a president.”

Regarding the circumstances surrounding the movement of representatives of the “quintet,” which was preceded by a meeting between the Saudi and Iranian ambassadors in Lebanon, he pointed out that “without detracting from the role of any party in the quintet, especially Saudi Arabia, and its active role in the presidential movement, it is clear that as a result of the internal positions It was announced that Hezbollah links the presidency of the republic to the Gaza war, meaning that the presidency comes second in the party’s sense, while Berri supports this position of the party, in addition to adhering to a single candidate. He believed that “linking the rise and salvation of Lebanon to the Gaza war is a coup attempt, because a disintegrated Lebanon does not serve Gaza, but rather Lebanon, a strong and cohesive state.”

Regarding the possibility of a truce and a ceasefire in Gaza and its withdrawal on the southern front, he stressed that “a ceasefire and war in Gaza is supposed,” asking, “If the clash between the Israeli enemy and the Palestinian people reaches a truce, can we not today in Lebanon reach a rationalization of the team?” The other, declaring a political truce and filling the fatal vacancy in state institutions, most notably the Presidency of the Republic? If we do not succeed in doing so, this means that there is a real catastrophe.”

As for the connection between the visit of Representatives Melhem Riachi and Wael Abu Faour to Saudi Arabia with the presidential movement, Yazbek explained that “the visit is periodic to convey the point of view of the Lebanese Forces party, and it comes within the framework of permanent consultation and confirmation that our choices are the right choices.”

He emphasized that “Saudi Arabia knows that the experience of former President Michel Aoun cannot be repeated again, and that we stand as an impenetrable barrier in the face of such a proposal, and we bet that saving Lebanon and returning it to Arab legitimacy will not be through replicating this experience.”
