Lebanon Lion Escape Sparks Panic: Violation of Wildlife Laws Exposed

“Lebanon Debate”

Last night, Tuesday, social networking sites were abuzz with the escape of a young lion from a farm in the Abu Samra area in Tripoli, which sparked fear and panic among the people of the city, especially the residents of that area.

In detail, the so-called Ibrahim Haddara posted a video on the Tik Tok platform, in which he confirmed that “the lion cub disappeared from his farm, but he does not know whether this cub was stolen from the farm, or if it escaped, as was spread on social networking sites.”

In turn, the mayor of Tripoli, Riad Yamq, confirmed to Lebanon Debate that since the news spread yesterday evening, Tuesday, members of the municipal police and members of the security forces have been mobilized to search for him, given the seriousness of the situation, especially since the citizens have lived in a state of extreme panic.

He pointed out that “the officers were able to catch the cub a little while ago, after an intense search that lasted for several hours. He took over the cub’s control, returned and placed it on the farm.”

However, animal rights defender in Lebanon, Ghina Nahfawi, revealed in an interview with “Lebanon Debate” that “the one called Haddara is a wildlife trader, and is in violation of the CITES agreement, which Lebanon signed in 2013, which is a treaty that prevents trafficking in endangered animals.”

She pointed out that “Haddara brags about violating the law on social media and trades in monkeys, including monkeys and other species, in addition to big cats. The Ministry of Agriculture had issued a decision in 2016 prohibiting the trade in all big cats, namely tigers and lions.”

Nahawi pointed out, “The case was in the custody of the Environmental Public Prosecutor in the North, Judge Ghassan Bassil, after the Caretaker Minister of Environment, Nasser Yassin, contacted him, and the Public Prosecutor handed over all the information and details in this context.”
