Lebanon has another government after months of protests NOW

Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab formed a new government on Tuesday, after the previous government was dissolved in October under pressure from fierce protests.

Prime Minister Diab, the Hezbollah Shiite movement and its allies have agreed to form a government to address the economic crisis and ongoing protests in Lebanon.

Saturday and Sunday broke in Lebanon protests again with dozens of injured as a result, after a period of relative rest. Diab calls the new government “a rescue team” and that the government will “deal with the economic situation quickly, but not in a hurry.”

Protests caused by economic crisis

The protests in Lebanon broke out on October 17 last year after the government had announced that it would be calling social media such as WhatsApp. After this tax proposal was withdrawn, protests continued and the tens of thousands of demonstrators focused on the economic problems, the poor state of public facilities and the widespread corruption in the country.

After five days of demonstrations, the Lebanese government came up with a package of economic emergency measures to satisfy the demonstrators. This did not help, so Lebanese Prime Minister Hariri decided on October 29 to resign.

In December 2019, the relatively unknown and partyless Hassan Diab was appointed as prime minister.
