At least five people were killed today by an Israeli strike near Saida, the largest city in southern Lebanon, the health ministry said.
According to the announcement, from the strike in Haret Sayda “five people were killed and 33 were injured”. Rescuers are searching for survivors in the rubble, the ministry added, noting that the toll is provisional.
The attack severely damaged a small building less than 500 meters from the one hit on Sunday, killing nine people.
More than 1,700 people have been killed in Lebanon since September 23, according to an AFP count that takes into account data released by the health ministry.
Israel threatens Qassem
Newly appointed Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem’s tenure will prove to be “temporary”, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallad said, in an apparent threat against Qassem following the assassination of the Shiite group’s leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut more than a month ago.
“Temporary appointment. Not for long,” Galland told X, accompanying his post with a photo of Kasem.
In its official Arabic account on X, the Israeli government said: “His tenure in this position may be the shortest in the history of this terrorist organization if he follows in the footsteps of his predecessors Hassan Nasrallah and Hashem Safyeddin.”
“There is no solution in Lebanon other than dismantling this organization as a military force,” he wrote.
Nasrallah was killed on September 27 in an Israeli raid in a southern Beirut neighborhood, and Hashem Safyeddin, his presumed successor, was also killed in early October by an Israeli strike. His death was confirmed last week by Hezbollah, which has lost several members of its leadership.
