Lebanon: Explosions in Beirut after Israeli army orders evacuation – 2024-10-06 08:40:53

The Israeli military has called on residents of certain buildings in Beirut’s southern suburbs – near three locations it believes are Hezbollah installations – to evacuate immediately, according to a post on social media platform X.

After the message-call, Lebanese media reported airstrikes in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

The Lebanese national news agency ANI reported that there were at least five Israeli shelling in and around the southern suburbs of Beirut, four of which were very heavy.

AFP journalists report hearing deafening explosions and seeing smoke rising from the sector.

Ambulances rushed to the scene, according to ANI, which also reported the presence of low-flying Israeli reconnaissance drones

Countdown to the attack on Iran

Israel is “preparing a response” to a missile attack launched on its soil by Iran, a military official said today, as the Israeli military launched new strikes against Tehran’s allies Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza.

Tuesday’s Iranian attack, the second since April, and the threat of an Israeli response, have fueled fears of a Middle East flare-up.

Israel will respond to Iran for the missile attack launched by Tehran when the time is right, military spokesman Daniel Haggari said, adding that two air bases hit by the attack remained fully operational and no aircraft were damaged.

The army spokesman also said the army had killed 440 Lebanese Hezbollah fighters since the start of the ground offensive it launched on Monday against the Islamist movement in southern Lebanon, where Israeli forces are intensifying their bombardment.

Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized in his speech on Saturday that “Iran is behind all the threats against us. They fired hundreds of missiles at us in one of the largest attacks in history. No country in the world would accept such an attack, and neither will Israel. Israel has the duty and the right to defend itself and respond to such attacks – and that is what we are going to do.”
