Lebanon Debate: Central Bank Considering Giving Dollars to Depositors

“Lebanon Debate”

Sources from the Bank of Lebanon confirmed to “Lebanon Debate” that “the Central Bank is considering giving an amount in dollars to those who do not receive dollars from banks according to the bank’s circulars.”

To learn about the importance of this issue for depositors, Lebanon Debate contacted Dr. Mahmoud Jabaei, who confirmed this matter, and confirmed that the acting governor of the bank, Dr. Wassim Mansouri, is seriously considering giving an amount in dollars to those who do not benefit from Circular 158, and who previously benefited from Circular 151.

As for the value of this amount, Jabaei confirmed that it is “currently under study at the bank, but he expected that this matter might happen soon and there is a number that will be agreed upon in order to give it to depositors.”

He stresses that “this matter is not linked to the bank dollar exchange rate, as this matter is with the government.”

He considered that “Mansouri is trying to help depositors in this matter in order to secure an amount for them in dollars while waiting for what the government will do regarding the issue of the new exchange rate. Thus, the Central Bank has contributed, even if only a little, by helping these depositors bear the burden of living.”

He confirms that “this matter is considered very good if these people are able to obtain the fresh dollar monthly because this will automatically contribute to reducing the fees on their deposits, and when the government sets an appropriate price for the official dollar in its budget, which itself will be the banking dollar, this will also contribute to improving the situation.” These depositors.

He hopes that “things will reach their conclusion quickly, and he considers this a positive step forward in addressing the depositors’ crises, but he considers that all of these solutions are partial solutions waiting for the comprehensive solution associated with the state developing a comprehensive plan for depositors and agreeing with the banks and the central bank, but such The steps taken by the Bank of Lebanon help depositors somewhere collect part of their deposit while awaiting a comprehensive solution.”

Jabaei hopes that “these comprehensive solutions will be very quick and that all the conditions of dollar depositors as well as savings deposit depositors will be addressed.”
