Lebanon Council of Ministers Approves Compensation Increase for Military Personnel and Retirees

“Nahar”

In the wake of protests by military retirees and public administration employees, the Council of Ministers holds a session in which it discusses the issue of giving temporary compensation to all public sector workers and retirees who benefit from a retirement pension, and amending the lump sum monthly transportation compensation for military personnel.

According to information obtained by An-Nahar, a formula was reached that could be acceptable to all administrative employees and military personnel. According to the formula, active-duty military personnel in all corps will be given 3 additional salaries, bringing the total they receive to 9 salaries per month, while retirees will be allocated 3 additional salaries, bringing the total they receive to 9 salaries per month, provided that the increase is not less than 8 million per month. As for public administration employees, they are supposed to receive two additional salaries, bringing the total they receive to 9 salaries per month.

It is also assumed that 4 million liras will be allocated as an additional transportation allowance for military personnel of all ranks, so that the monthly transportation allowance will become 9 million liras instead of 5 million liras per month.

Also, employees of public administrations will be allocated exclusively 16 cans of gasoline for the first category, 14 cans for the second category, 12 cans for the third category, 10 cans for the fourth category, 8 cans for the fifth category (with a ceiling of one million and 500 thousand Lebanese pounds per can), with the condition of attendance being 18 days per month.

Municipal employees, government hospitals, and public institutions that did not give raises to their employees benefit from these increases, just like public administrations.

The cost of these increases exceeds 2,700 billion per month, and therefore the government will need to request the opening of an additional credit of about 10 thousand billion liras for the year 2024 to cover these increases.

Under this proposal, retirees received 1,200 billion liras out of 2,700 billion, meaning more than 40 percent of the amount went to retirees.
