According to the department’s estimates, the storm will begin Friday with partly cloudy skies, transitioning to cloudy conditions in the afternoon. Temperatures will drop, notably in mountainous and coastal areas. “Lebanon and the eastern Mediterranean basin are affected by some local fluctuations, and then the region and Lebanon are dominated by a depression centered south of Italy, starting on Saturday, accompanied by relatively cold air masses that bring with it rain, snow, active winds, and thunderstorms,” the bulletin stated.
Detailed Forecast:
Friday: Expect partly cloudy to cloudy skies with a temperature drop, especially inland and in the highlands. Scattered light rain is possible, with fog developing in the highlands by evening, reducing visibility.
Saturday: The storm intensifies. Morning will see partly cloudy skies, becoming fully cloudy in the afternoon. Temperatures will drop slightly in mountainous and coastal regions. Strong winds, reaching up to 70 km/h (approximately 43 mph) in the evening, will accompany scattered rain, lightning, and thunder. Light snow is anticipated at night above 2,200 meters (7,218 feet).

The potential for significant rainfall raises concerns about flooding and landslides, particularly in areas with vulnerable infrastructure. Residents are urged to monitor weather updates and heed any official warnings. The storm’s intensity is comparable to winter storms experienced in mountainous regions of the U.S., highlighting the need for preparedness.
This severe weather event underscores the importance of having emergency preparedness plans in place, similar to those recommended by the federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for U.S. residents facing severe weather.Staying informed and taking necessary precautions is crucial for safety.

Staying Safe in the Storm: An Interview with Dr. Leila Dib
Senior Editor, world Today News: Welcome to World Today News. We’re joined today by Dr. Leila dib, a climatologist with the American University of Beirut, to discuss the impending storm and its potential impact on the region. Dr. Dib, thank you for joining us.
Dr.Leila Dib: It’s my pleasure to be here. I hope we can shed some light on this significant weather event and help people understand the necessary precautions.
Senior Editor: This storm is being described as particularly powerful. Can you elaborate on its characteristics?
Dr. Dib: Absolutely. This storm system is driven by a depression centered south of Italy, pulling in cold air masses from the north. We expect a multi-day event with heavy rainfall, particularly on Saturday and Sunday. This rain, coupled with melting snow in the higher elevations, raises concerns about flash floods and landslides, especially in areas with poor drainage.
Senior Editor: The forecast mentions snow as well. At what elevations should we expect to see snowfall?
Dr. Dib: Initially, snowfall is predicted above 2,200 meters (7,218 feet), but as temperatures drop further, the snow line could descend to around 1,900 meters (6,234 feet). This could lead to hazardous driving conditions in mountainous areas, so it’s crucial for people to avoid unnecessary travel during the storm.
Senior Editor: what steps can residents take to prepare for this storm?
Dr. Dib: preparation is key. It’s important to secure loose objects outdoors, clear gutters and drains, and ensure you have an emergency kit readily available. This kit should include essential items like water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, batteries, and a first-aid kit. Staying informed through official weather updates and heeding any evacuation orders is crucial for safety.
Senior Editor: Are there any specific areas of concern in Beirut or surrounding regions?
Dr. Dib: Areas with older infrastructure, particularly those prone to flooding in the past, should be particularly vigilant.
Coastal regions should also be mindful of the high waves and potential for storm surge. It’s essential to avoid walking or driving through flooded areas, as the water may be deeper and faster-moving than it appears.
Senior Editor: Dr. Dib, thank you for sharing your expertise and insights. We appreciate you taking the time to speak with us during this important time.
Dr. Dib: My pleasure. I encourage everyone to stay safe and prioritize their well-being during this storm.
