The Lebanese Minister of Public Works and Transport, Ali Hamiyeh, announced the arrival of the oil and gas exploration vessel “Transocean Barents” to concession area No. 9, on Wednesday, to start exploration activities.
And the Lebanese official posted on the “X” platform (formerly Twitter): “Today, Wednesday 8/16/2023 in the morning, the oil and gas exploration vessel in Block No. 9 has reached (…) the drilling point set for it.”
The announcement comes after the signing last October of an agreement to demarcate the maritime borders between Lebanon and Israel, paving the way for the exploitation of rewarding offshore gas fields off the two countries.
Beirut divided its exclusive economic zone in the sea into ten patches, and the ninth patch was part of the disputed area with Israel.
Block 9 contains the Qana field, also called the Sidon field.
The “consortium” drilling in Concession No. 9 is led by France’s Total Energies and includes Italian energy giant Eni and state energy company Qatar, according to Reuters.
