“The head of the Department of Psychiatry at the Faculty of Medicine at Saint Joseph University, Professor Sami Risha, became the first Lebanese psychiatrist to be elected as a member of the National Academy of Medicine in France, since it was founded nearly 200 years ago.
This prestigious institution is as important in the field of medicine as the French Academy of Languages.
Richa was unanimously elected as a Corresponding Member of the Academy within the “Medicine and Society” section of the National Academy of Medicine, which was founded in 1820, and is the most prominent body of doctors in France.
The academy works to collect medical competencies and enhance France’s image in the world through health.
The French government often requests reports and positions on medical issues, and the opinions it gives become a reference.
Risha (54 years old) founded the Psychiatry Department at Hotel Dieu Hospital in Beirut and headed it for 12 years. He also chairs the Ethics Committee at the same hospital, and is a member of the Lebanese National Advisory Committee for Ethics in the Life and Health Sciences.
Risha, who also founded the Francophone Association for People with Mental Illness and previously served as president of the Lebanese Psychiatric Association, has about 150 scientific articles published in the most prominent specialized journals. He is a French-language writer who has so far published two novels: Trois dont un de plus (“Three…one of them is plus.” Of necessity”), Le monde ne va pas si mal (“The state of the world is not that bad”), and three medical books: La psychiatrie au Liban- One histoire et un regard (“Psychiatry in Lebanon – History and View”) and Parler de la psychiatrie à mes filles (“Talking to my two daughters about psychiatry”) and Manuel d’éthique en psychiatrie (“Guide to ethics in psychiatry”).
His next book will be published in France and Lebanon next October and will be entitled 12 cas cliniques en éthique psychiatrique (“12 clinical cases in the ethics of psychiatry”).
