Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri visited the Transocean drilling rig, which arrived in Lebanese territorial waters a week ago, to start oil and gas exploration.

The Lebanese government delegation moved to the “Transocean” drilling platform in the southern waters, on board a helicopter belonging to the French company “Total Energy”, where it was briefed on the ongoing preparations to start drilling and exploration for oil and gas.
The tour was attended by Minister of Public Works and Transport Ali Hamiyah, Minister of Energy and Water Walid Fayyad, Director General of the Presidency of the Republic Antoine Choucair, Chairman of the Petroleum Administration Wissam Dahabi, and a delegation from the French company Total Energy.

The Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri, said that today’s visit is a “joy” for which the country has worked for many years, so that the framework agreement announced from Ain al-Tineh on October 1, 2020, will be achieved, hoping that a few months will not pass until God blesses Lebanon with flows.

Nabih Berri explained that the oil and gas flows in Lebanon, which the Transocean drilling platform will extract, is the beginning of overcoming the economic crisis that the country and its people are experiencing, and also contributes to the Lebanese consensus on electing a president who will play his role, which will be the beginning of a political solution.

On August 16, 2023, the “Transocean” platform reached the Lebanese territorial waters, and headed to Block “9”, to start oil and gas exploration operations, in a move on which Beirut pinned great hopes to get it out of its current economic crisis.
