Lebanese President urges security forces to restore calm in Beirut

Lebanese President Michel Aoun has asked the commanders of the army and security services to restore calm in the center of Beirut, reports Reuters. Anti-government rallies continue in the city center, which have grown into riots and are accompanied by clashes with law enforcement agencies. On Saturday, January 18, more than 150 people were injured.

“Michel Aoun called for protecting the safety of peaceful demonstrators, as well as public and private property, and restoring calm in central Beirut,” the presidential administration said in a statement.

Aggressive demonstrators threw stones and firecrackers at the police. In response, representatives of law enforcement agencies used water guns and tear gas. As the correspondent reports “RIA News” from Beirut, at present, the internal security forces and army units managed to disperse the aggressively-minded demonstrators, the clashes ceased. Anti-government rally continues in a peaceful manner.

Protests in Beirut and other cities across the country broke out in October. Lebanese authorities have declared a state of emergency in the economy.
