Lebanese Political Crisis: Maronite Patriarch Calls for Consensus on President

“Lebanese Debate”

Significantly, the sermon of the Maronite Patriarch, Mar Beshara Boutros Al-Rahi, appeared this Sunday morning, in which he called for consensus on a president with the formula “neither victor nor vanquished.”

Al-Rahi’s position came as a response to the “antariat” of the head of the Free Patriotic Movement, Gebran Bassil, aimed at continuing to drain influence and benefit from power.

Therefore, Basil seeks to try to impose a confrontational candidate on the opposition and his current in order to preserve his personal and narrow interests, so that he may bargain with him later, and only for the sake of the power game, which he claims to “protect his current from.”

The question arises: If this is true, why does he support a candidate in another way, and will he abstain from participating in the actual power, that is, in the government?
