Lebanese PM Calls for Humanitarian Ceasefire in Gaza and Prisoner Exchange: Latest Updates

Beirut – Marjayoun – South Lebanon, November 1, 2023 (Xinhua) – Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati called today (Wednesday) for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza for a period of 5 days, during which international contacts will be active to exchange prisoners and establish a permanent truce to agree on bringing peace to the region.

This came according to a statement by Information Minister Ziad Al-Makari in an intervention by Mikati in a session held by the Council of Ministers today.

Mikati said in the session, “Lebanon is present in the diplomatic contacts that are taking place, and in the context of these contacts, I visited the State of Qatar to see the latest contacts and the possibility of reaching a ceasefire (between Israel and Hamas), after which other endeavors can begin.”

He added, “There is a race between a ceasefire and things going away.”

He believed that “a ceasefire for a period of 5 days is necessary under a humanitarian pretext, and during this period international communications will be active in order to complete the prisoner exchange process to establish a permanent truce in order to agree on the lines required to bring peace to the region.”

On the other hand, a young Lebanese boy was killed in an air strike carried out by an Israeli drone this morning in the town of Yater in the central sector of southern Lebanon.

Lebanese military sources indicated to Xinhua News Agency that an Israeli march fired two air-to-surface missiles towards the young man, Hussein Kawtharani (16 years old), while he was riding his motorcycle in the middle of his town of Yater in the central sector of southern Lebanon, which led to him being seriously injured. Transfer He was taken to the hospital, but he soon died.

Thus, the death toll on the Lebanese side since last October 8 rose to 63 dead, including 49 members of Hezbollah, in addition to 9 members of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and Islamic Jihad in Lebanon, and 5 civilians, including a photojournalist.

The border between Lebanon and Israel witnesses daily intermittent bombing and exchange of fire between Hezbollah, Palestinian movements, and the Israeli army, since Hamas launched Operation “Al-Aqsa Flood” on October 7, which responded by launching Operation “Iron Swords” against Hamas in Gaza Strip and declaring a state of war for the first time in 50 years./end of news/
