The representative of the Loyalty to the Resistance Bloc in the Lebanese parliament (Hezbollah), Hassan Fadlallah, confirmed that the new candidate for the Lebanese presidency is “for confrontation and challenge,” stressing that he “will not arrive.”
Fadlallah welcomed “dialogue and convergence, and finding consensus to elect a president for the republic away from imposition and challenge.”
He also said, “In contrast to our keenness on dialogue and understanding to achieve the presidential election, the team that raised the slogan of bringing a confrontational president insists on denying reality and the reality of internal balances and the composition of the parliament.”
He added that this team “believes that it is smart on the Lebanese, and after exhausting its first game and consuming its candidate with sessions that turned into a drain on the reputation of the institutions, today it is trying to reproduce the same game by consuming another name.”
Representative Fadlallah added, “The parliament’s role is to elect a president for all the Lebanese, not a president for a political team whose approach is imposition and abolition. They allow themselves to nominate whoever they want, and when other blocs support a friend of ours, they call that an imposition, because the title of their battle is the rejection of the president who is able to communicate with everyone.” Domestically and externally, the president who bears the character of confrontation is imposed.
He said, “Do not tire yourselves and waste time. The challenge and confrontation candidate will not reach Baabda, whatever his name is. We will prevent them from achieving their goals, and they will not be able to impose their candidate on the rest of the Lebanese, neither constitutionally, nor politically, nor through the media.”
Yesterday, the head of the Free Patriotic Movement, Gebran Bassil, announced his movement’s support for the candidacy of former Finance Minister Jihad Azour for the presidency. Hezbollah had previously announced its support for Suleiman Franjieh in the Lebanese presidential elections.
Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri reiterated, on Thursday, that the doors of the parliament “have not and will not be closed before a session to elect a president of the republic,” and said that if “at least two serious candidates for the presidency” are announced, they will find that the doors of the parliament are open.
For his part, Representative Jamil Al-Sayed tweeted, on his Twitter account, writing that “after Jihad Azour’s fortunes increased, US sanctions are being threatened against Berri if he does not call for a parliament meeting to elect a president.”
A few days ago, the election entered a new turning point, the first of its kind, with the United States directly joining the international campaign to expedite the election of a new president for the republic, which reveals the extent of American interference in Lebanese affairs.
The US administration has threatened to impose sanctions on officials who delay this entitlement, according to its claim. The new American position on the presidential election came from the words of US Assistant Secretary of State for Near East Affairs, Barbara Leaf.
