Lebanese Minister of Interior addresses security in Ain al-Hilweh camp and Kahala incident

The Minister of Interior and Municipalities confirmed in the caretaker government in Lebanon Judge Bassam Mawlawi said that he would not allow the camps, specifically the Ain al-Hilweh camp, to be a source of disturbing security in any Lebanese region, according to the National News Agency for Lebanon.

Mawlawi added, “Nothing is above the law, and the judicial path is the right path, and the role of the security forces is necessary for security, to implement the law, and to establish security for the benefit of citizens,” noting that investigations are continuing on the issue of the events of Ain al-Hilweh camp, and the General Security, the army, and the entire committee are following up on investigations and efforts to control the matter. And continue to calm down.

Mawlawi stressed the pivotal role of the Lebanese army and all security forces and judicial authorities to protect the security of citizens and civil peace and achieve stability, pointing to raising security readiness to keep pace with developments and to protect citizens, and that what happened recently is the subject of ongoing investigations in accordance with the rules of the security authorities, under the supervision of the judicial authorities. This came during his chairmanship of a meeting of the Central Security Council in the ministry, to discuss the security developments that took place last week and to complete the research with the developments that took place in Ain al-Hilweh camp, in the presence of the Public Defender, Judge Ghassan Khoury, the Governor of Beirut, Judge Marwan Abboud, and the Director General of the Internal Security Forces, Major General Imad. Othman, Director General of the State Security Agency, Major General Tony Saliba, Secretary of the Supreme Council of Defense, Major General Muhammad Al Mustafa, Director General of Public Security, Major General Elias Al Baysari, Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations in the Army, Brigadier General Hassan Al Jouni, Head of the Information Division, Brigadier General Khaled Hammoud, Director of Intelligence in the Army Brigadier General Tony Kahwaji, Commander of the Airport Security Service Brigadier General P.S.C. Fadi Kfoury, Deputy Director General of State Security, Administrative Brigadier Hassan Choucair, Head of the Information Affairs Office of the General Security Brigadier General Youssef Al-Madwar, Secretary of the Central Security Council Brigadier General Sami Nassif.

Regarding the Kahala incident, he said: “Unfortunately, we heard statements that reminded of war, and what should be launched, and we confirm what came in the sermon of the Maronite Diocese of Beirut, Bishop Boulos Abdel Sater, during the funeral ceremony in Kahala, which is a complete model of coexistence, and an example to follow. In order to stabilize civil peace, he called on all politicians and the media to “keep up with Abdel Sater’s sermon, and that all statements aim at protecting civil peace and unity between citizens and the application of the law,” stressing “the application of the law and the protection of citizens, and all the security and military agencies are in constant coordination with each other, We are in full coordination with her to get through this difficult stage.”
