Lebanese Minister of Displaced Persons, Issam Sharaf El-Din, criticized what he described as “delay and wasting time” in the issue of returning displaced Syrians residing in Lebanon.

Sharaf al-Din said in an exclusive interview with Erem News that his ministry has developed a practical plan that guarantees the gradual and safe return of displaced Syrians, stressing that 90% of Syrian territory is safe.

He pointed out the existence of a Russian protocol that guarantees the repair of destroyed villages and the provision of a food basket to returning displaced persons, as an alternative to the aid provided by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Regarding the number of displaced Syrians in Lebanon, he said that those registered with the Commission number 810,000 displaced persons, while he confirmed that there are two million two hundred thousand displaced Syrians, in addition to 30 thousand who came after the recent earthquake that struck Syria, in addition to annual births and new displacement in the last three months. This raises the number to two and a half million displaced people, he confirmed.

He warned that the presence of this number of displaced Syrians in Lebanon has major economic, security and demographic repercussions.

Regarding the data recently provided by UNHCR to the Lebanese government regarding the displaced, he pointed out that it helps in “sorting” the displaced and determining who can stay and who must leave.

In response to a question about the extent of controlling the leakage of Syrians across the Lebanese border, Sharaf al-Din revealed measures taken by the Syrian authorities recently, which led to controlling the border by 90%, explaining that the remaining percentage is of Syrians entering illegally through “networks that facilitate this from Syria and Lebanon.”
