Lebanese Man Shot in Mouth by Security Forces; Government Hospital Demands $3,000 for Treatment

“Lebanon Debate”

This Tuesday afternoon, while passing on the main road in Naameh with his family, the young Lebanese man, Ziad Rabah Al-Omar, was accidentally shot in the mouth by a security force that was carrying out a raid in the area.

As a result of his injury, the family transferred him urgently to Siblin Governmental Hospital.

But the surprise was that the hospital requested 3,000 “Fresh” dollars in order to admit Ziad to the hospital and treat his injury. How could Siblin Hospital, a government hospital, require a sum of money to be given to a citizen who was bleeding and in serious condition to admit him to the hospital and treat him?

After back and forth between Ziad’s family and officials inside the hospital, the family was able to secure $2,000, and Ziad was admitted to the operating room for treatment.

Have government hospitals become similar to private hospitals, imposing huge sums of money on citizens in light of the economic crisis and the cost to citizens’ lives? Where is the Minister of Health, Firas Abyad, in what is happening? Is what is happening inside government hospitals by his order or by the efforts of hospital directors?
