Nawaf Salam, a native of Lebanon, was elected as the President of the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Nawaz Salam will serve as President for the next three years.
This was informed through a press release issued by the ICJ. Judge Nawaf Salam has been a member of the ICJ since February 6, 2018. Nawaf Salam was Lebanon’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York from July 2007 to December 2018, before taking up the post of judge. Salam has a history of making anti-Israeli statements.
It will also preside over the case initiated by South Africa against Israel, which it claims is running an ID race in Gaza, the ICJ said in a press release. Nawaz Salam had already made anti-Israeli statements. Nawaf Salam had earlier demanded an end to Israel’s occupation against the Palestinian people. In 2015, Salam had said that Israel should end its aggression.
In the same year, Nawaf wished an unhappy birthday against the Jewish state on Independence Day and highlighted their 48 years of occupation. Achieving international justice and upholding international law is my great responsibility, said Nawaf Salam.
