Lebanese Hezbollah Vows Retaliation for Assassination of Hamas Leader in Beirut Suburb

Beirut, January 2, 2024 (Xinhua) This evening (Tuesday), the Lebanese Hezbollah considered that the assassination of the deputy head of the Hamas political bureau, Saleh Al-Arouri, in the Beirut suburb is an attack on Lebanon and a dangerous development that “will not go unpunished.”

In a statement issued by it, the party considered, “The crime of assassinating Al-Arouri and his companions in the heart of the southern suburb of Beirut is a dangerous attack on Lebanon, its people, its security, its sovereignty, its resistance, and the highly symbolic and significant political and security messages it contains, and a dangerous development in the course of the war between the enemy and the axis of resistance.”

He added, “We in Hezbollah affirm that this crime will never pass without response and punishment, and that our resistance has been steadfast, steadfast and faithful to its principles and commitments that it has made to itself. Its hand is on the trigger, and its resistors are in the highest levels of readiness and preparedness, and this is a day that will be witnessed beyond its reach.” “For days.”

This evening, an Israeli march targeted an apartment in the southern suburb of Beirut (one of Hezbollah’s main strongholds in Lebanon) with three missiles, where a meeting was being held in the presence of Hamas leader Saleh Al-Arouri and his companions, according to the official Lebanese National News Agency.

The Hamas movement confirmed the assassination of the deputy head of its political bureau, Saleh Al-Arouri, in a hostile strike in the southern suburb of Beirut, along with two commanders of the Al-Qassam Brigades (the military arm of Hamas), Samir Fandi and Azzam Al-Aqra’.

The Lebanese agency reported that the death toll from the attack rose from 6 to 7 people, with 11 wounded.

A number of officials in Palestinian organizations reside in Lebanon, and Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah had previously confirmed that any targeting of any person residing in Lebanon, regardless of their nationality, would be responded to.

In recent weeks, Israeli officials threatened to assassinate the leaders of the Hamas movement inside and outside the Palestinian territories, especially Al-Arouri, who was accused by the Israeli security services of being behind the financing of military cells in the West Bank.

The assassination of Al-Arouri comes at a time when the border between Lebanon and Israel is witnessing escalating tension and intermittent military confrontations between the Lebanese Hezbollah and armed Palestinian factions on the one hand, and the Israeli army on the other hand, since the outbreak of war between Hamas and Israel in the Gaza Strip on October 7 last.

Since last October 7, Israel has been waging a large-scale war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip under the name “Iron Swords,” which has claimed the lives of more than 22,000 Palestinians.

The Hamas movement launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel, which it called the “Al-Aqsa Flood,” which killed more than 1,200 Israelis, according to the Israeli authorities.
