Lebanese Government Implements Solution Following Disarray: Wednesday Marks the Commencement of Daylight Saving Time

Not next month, but next Wednesday, the clocks will go forward one hour in Lebanon. Prime Minister Mikati has backtracked from his controversial and abrupt decision to wait a month before introducing daylight saving time.

Last weekend’s announcement sparked chaos and division in a country already hard hit by crises. According to Mikati, the decision is now being reversed after a “calm discussion”. As with the choice to stay longer in winter time, no explanation has been given.

“Time Zones”

Since Sunday morning, Lebanese society has been divided into different time zones. Part of the population follows the government’s decision not to set the clocks forward until April. And another part, as in Europe, has lost an hour in the night from Saturday to Sunday.

It is believed that the measure was imposed because of Ramadan. During winter time it gets dark earlier and people can therefore stop fasting an hour earlier.
