Geagea pointed out that “a caretaker government and the role of the army is pivotal and very sensitive. Let us imagine that security is at stake amid the economic crisis, as happened in Latin American countries during the coups.”
He believed that “the importance of the army leadership file lies in the fact that the Lebanese army is not an institution like others. Despite everything that happened on October 17, it did everything necessary to maintain security.”
He considered that “the axis of resistance depends on suppressing people, and an example of this is what happened in Syria and Iran during the revolution, and we all know what happened previously during the period of Syrian tutelage in Lebanon, and this axis since the independence revolution in 2005 “has not taken its eyes off the army leadership.”
He added, “The caretaker government is affiliated with the resistance axis and will manipulate the army leadership as it pleases and wants to turn the leadership into a secret police. Therefore, we are interested in the leadership of the army,” stressing that “we are insisting on extending the term for General Joseph Aoun because we know that despite the collapse in the state, he was able to secure the minimum.” To manage the affairs of the Lebanese Army.
He continued, “House of Representatives Speaker Nabih Berri called for an extension session, and all of this was planned by the resistance axis to obstruct the extension of the army commander. We view the call for a cabinet session next Friday suspiciously, as extending this session of the army commander will lead to a large degree of his being challenged.”
He considered that “there is a conspiracy against the renewal of the army commander, led by Gebran Bassil, the ‘disaster of the republic,’ and the only one capable of stopping this conspiracy is Najib Mikati, and we are continuing to work to extend the term of the army commander in the House of Representatives.”
Geagea stressed, “We are against legislation in the absence of the President of the Republic, but there are exceptions under extreme circumstances such as the circumstances we are going through today, which force us to go to the House of Representatives to extend an extension to the Army Commander.”
