Lebanese Debate: Scandalous Mismanagement of Medicines in the Ministry of Health

“Lebanese Debate”

Confusion continues in the Lebanese administrations, which may be justified somewhere, but it is certainly not justified in the case of the delicate health situation of the Lebanese who, due to the practices of the Minister of Health, Firas Al-Abyad, will not be able to secure medicines for their chronic diseases and even cancer.

Recently, the pharmacies’ refusal to deliver subsidized medicines to patients suffering from chronic and incurable diseases, such as cancer and multiple sclerosis, has caused great resentment among citizens.

The Ministry of Health claims that the reason for this reluctance is due to the lifting of subsidies for these drugs, but patients confirm that the quantities allocated to them in the current month are still subsidized as they were. Did the ministry obtain the order to raise subsidies in order to steal medicines that came with the names of patients?

To find out the truth about what is happening in the Ministry of Health, “Lebanese Debate” contacted the mother of one of the patients, and confirmed that she had obtained prior approval from the Ministry of Health to obtain the subsidized medicine in her son’s name, but she was surprised that this approval was revoked without her knowledge, noting that the price of The medicine is $28,000, an amount that no ordinary citizen can afford.

The mother revealed a meeting she had with the Minister of Health in the caretaker government, Firas Abyad, who explained to her in controversial words: “You have spiritual money to buy, and you can’t take it from what is available,” that is, an alternative, which is completely rejected by the attending physician because her son’s condition cannot bear it.

The minister, who was originally a doctor, did not assign himself to investigate the matter, so how did the approval come and then the medicine disappeared? And how does he allow himself to give the patient the option of paying the cost of medicine out of his own pocket? If he had the money, would he have resorted to the Ministry of Health?!

Therefore, the mother asks: “The Ministry gave prior approval, which means that the medicine was subsidized in the name of her son, so where did he go with it? And to whom did the Minister sell it? Is there another patient who has an intermediary?”

This is a sample of what is happening in the Ministry of Health, because the examples and scandals are great in this file, so is anyone holding the minister or others accountable for this flagrant failure?
