A Lebanese citizen, accompanied by his child, stormed a bank branch to demand the withdrawal of his $15,000 deposit, threatening to set the place on fire if his request was rejected.
The Depositors’ Cry Association said, on Monday, through its official account on the Twitter site, that the so-called “A.A” stormed a bank in the Antelias area of the Matn Governorate, accompanied by his 13-year-old son.
The man threatened to set fire if he did not receive his deposit, which led to a state of chaos and panic among the employees, according to the newspaper.daylocal.
In the end, the bank acquiesced to the assailant’s demands, and was given his deposit, without knowing whether the security forces intervened to arrest him at a later time.
Lebanon has witnessed several attempts to storm banks in the past two years, after decisions to restrict and freeze money accounts, which particularly targeted small depositors.
The head of the “Association of Depositors”, Hassan Mughniyeh, told Al-Hurra earlier that the value of deposits in Lebanese banks is estimated at one hundred billion dollars, after it was estimated at 164 billion dollars on October 17, 2019.
It is estimated that only $10 billion is available to the Central Bank of Lebanon, in addition to three billion dollars that Lebanese banks say are in correspondent banks.
Lebanese banks have been holding the funds of their Lebanese and foreign depositors since 2019, and impose strict restrictions on withdrawals, especially in foreign currencies, despite the absence of any legal text that gives them the right to take the step they took, and since then, the voices of depositors have been rising to recover their money.
