Lebanese artist Elissa reveals her battle with cancer and its emotional toll in new Netflix documentary “It’s Ok” – Can psychological stress lead to cancer?

Lebanese artist Elissa revealed that her experience fighting cancer has become the focus of many people’s attention in recent years after she succeeded in defeating the disease and did not succumb to it completely.

Elissa spoke about details related to her emotional life, linking it to her cancer, through the documentary film “It’s Ok,” which revolves around her life story and is broadcast on the Netflix platform, confirming that her exposure to cancer occurred due to her poor psychological state after going through a failed love experience.

Elissa appeared crying while narrating her journey with breast cancer, and her exposure to bullying during her artistic career and since its beginning. Elissa spoke in the film’s promo about a toxic love relationship that caused her to contract cancer due to the severity of the oppression caused by this person. The promo brought many tears for Elissa every time. She talked about one of the disappointments she had been exposed to, or remembered the amount of bullying she had witnessed regarding her appearance, her clothes, and the way she spoke.

Elissa said: “I ran away from everything related to the disease and used to say that the medications I took were crazy,” adding, “Cancer came from behind a love relationship that was toxic.”

But can bad psychological experiences cause this deadly disease? Does psychological stress lead to cancer?
Research has not proven a specific and direct causal relationship between stress, tension, and cancer, knowing that the relationship between mental and psychological health and physical health is very complex, according to the Cancer.Ca website.

Psychological stress can affect the health of the body in general, and as for cancer, it can be said that there are 3 factors associated with the risk of cancer as a result of exposure to stress and nervous pressure:
1- A poor psychological state can weaken the immune system, which defends the body against infections and diseases, as a weak immune system plays a role in the development of some types of cancer.

2- Stress and sadness can change the levels of some hormones in the body, and this may also expose the person to a greater risk of cancer. Stress may also lead to unhealthy behaviors.
3- Overeating, smoking, and excessive drinking of alcohol are all factors associated with poor mood, and this change in lifestyle may increase the risk of cancer.

Experts usually advise the need to avoid stress, anxiety, and nervous pressure by practicing exercise, yoga, breathing exercises, meditation, engaging in favorite activities, seeking help from close ones and friends, and speaking with a specialist doctor if necessary.
