Why is it important to develop our computational thinking?

In recent years, computational thinking has become one of the most important skills for everyone, especially young people, due to changes in the job market and the increasingly important role that algorithms and artificial intelligence have taken on. Being able to solve problems even thinking like a programmer is becoming more and more necessary.

ECDL Computing is the first international certification module to the international ECDL standard that establishes the essential concepts and skills related to the ability to use computational thinking and develops the programming knowledge to create simple computer applications, using an increasingly popular coding language – Python.

With 27 years of experience in education and an experienced collaborator in ECDL Romania projects, teacher Mariana Violeta Ciobanu shares with us some opinions about the ECDL Computing certification course, which she teaches at the ECDL EduHub Summer School.

“Within this course, participants become familiar with the specific techniques of computational thinking such as: decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, algorithm development. Thus, they develop their programming skills in the Python language and learn to create graphical interfaces and games using commands from the Turtle and PyGame libraries. At the same time, the course promotes creative and innovative thinking and encourages collaboration and communication skills in the context of teamwork.”

Also, teacher Violeta Ciobanu emphasizes the importance of computational thinking and states that: “It allows students to improve their approach to solving problems, to structure their reasoning and, thus, to find optimal solutions for problems in everyday life!”.

According to teacher Mariana Ciobanu, the graduates of this course “appreciated the way the course content was structured and positively evaluated the effectiveness of the learning (training) in terms of the teaching method, the practical exercises, the additional resources and the feedback received along the way.”
