What effects does climate change have on manufacturing companies and how can they adapt to changing climatic conditions? This question is posed by a new project on sustainability research at the interdisciplinary Institute Ideen (Digital Engineering) at the University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt. The aim of the Main-Klima-Plus project is to support companies in identifying the challenges of climate change and developing adaptation measures, according to the FHWS in a press release.
The Federal Environment Ministry is funding the project by resolution of the Bundestag for two years with more than 193,000 euros. IG Metall Schweinfurt, the Würzburg-Schweinfurt Chamber of Industry and Commerce and the Lower Franconian Chamber of Crafts support it as partners and are intended to be the intermediary for the educational components developed in the project.
In a globalized economy, companies are highly interdependent, according to the FHWS. As a result, the flow of production is susceptible to external disruptions that can be triggered, for example, by climate change. Measures would have to be developed here at an early stage in order to minimize the economic and political consequences of climate change.
Main-Klima-Plus would like to set impulses through an innovative educational program for companies. Business actors should be motivated and empowered to independently develop individual strategies for climate adaptation. The basis is a regional study that processes the extent to which companies are already introducing adaptation measures.
The main component of the educational program, however, is a business game: The participants are confronted with various simulated climatic conditions, can try out adaptation strategies and experience their effects. Different scenarios of climate change can be played through and effects and necessary adjustments can be brought into a dialogue. In this way, companies could be made aware of the problem of climate change and concrete measures could be developed using practical scenarios.
