Manjeri: One of four children in a family admitted to hospital with vomiting, diarrhea and fever after consuming dill and mayonnaise has been diagnosed with Shigella. The disease was confirmed by the son of a native of Manjeri Kanjiratukun. The four-year-old boy is in the intensive care unit of Kozhikode Medical College Hospital, unable to open his eyes or speak. He was shifted to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital due to severe fever and diarrhea. Shigella was confirmed in the test conducted here.

On last Friday, the children ate pumpkin and mayonnaise from a shop in Manjeri. The parents report that he developed vomiting, diarrhea and fever that very night. The children were treated at Mancheri Medical College Hospital. All recovered except the four-year-old.

Shigella

Shigallosis is caused by bacteria belonging to the genus Shigella. Diarrhea is the main symptom. It is more serious than normal diarrhea.

Diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain, vomiting, fatigue, bloody stools
Because Shigella bacteria mainly infect the intestines, diarrhea may also pass blood
Symptoms last two to seven days. In some cases, symptoms may persist. Some have no symptoms.
Children under the age of five and those with weakened immune systems are more likely to die if the symptoms become severe.

Transmission method

Shigellosis is transmitted through contaminated water, contaminated food, unwashed fruits and vegetables, close contact with Shigella-infected individuals, and eating food prepared by infected individuals. The disease is easily spread by direct or indirect contact with the feces of patients.
