Yasser Rashad – Cairo – The Heliopolis Society, headed by Dr. Nabil Helmy, continues to organize its astronomical activities in all its cultural and creative platforms, in order to spread astronomical culture, galactic sciences, and catastrophic planets and stars, which keep pace with the interest of international bodies concerned with the affairs of the sky and the abundant signs of the Creator. Dr. Nabil Helmy, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Heliopolis Society, said that interest in astronomy goes back to the ancient Easterners, who were wonderfully advanced in astronomical sciences. They knew how to observe the stars and planets and use appropriate observation tools, such as sundial, water clocks, etc. They also knew the solar calendar and the lunar calendar, where they divided the year into twelve months and the month into thirty days, so the solar year is 365 days, while the lunar year is 354 days. They also observed the phenomena of eclipses and solar eclipses.
Dr. Nabil Helmy indicated that the association, with its various cultural branches, organizes astronomical events within the framework of programs with the Egyptian Society for Astronomy (ESA). At 7 pm tomorrow, Tuesday, it is organizing an astronomical evening at the headquarters of the Future Library.
Attendees will observe the surface of the moon using telescopes, watch meteor craters, and photograph them with a mobile phone camera through the telescope lens. They will also observe the largest planet in the solar system, Jupiter, with its four famous moons. With the naked eye, participants learn about some of the star constellations that can be seen from within the city and how to determine directions by the stars, in addition to a general discussion of the attendees’ astronomical inquiries during the evening.
