In the Southern California region, Los Angeles County has 10 hospitals, Orange County and San Bernardino County each have 7 hospitals, Riverside County has 4 hospitals, Ventura County has 3 hospitals, and San Diego County has 14 hospitals rated A class. According to the portalwww.officialusa.comthere are about 570 hospitals in California, of which 122 are government hospitals and 148 are private hospitals. The comprehensive acute care hospitals are mostly concentrated in big cities.

A hospital may have the best surgeons and technologically advanced equipment in the world, but you also need to know how well the hospital is doing at preventing infections and reducing medical errors. One of the most serious problems in today’s healthcare system is the failure to provide the public with the safety and quality information patients should know to make informed decisions.
Founded in 2000 by employers, purchasers and healthcare professionals, the Leapfrog Group increases transparency in hospital safety through data collection and public reporting to help consumers protect themselves and their families from medical errors or accidents harm, and drive improvements in the quality of health care and safety in the United States.
Leapfrog Group releases safety index rating reports twice a year for nearly 3,000 comprehensive acute care hospitals in the United States. According to 32 national performance indicators, the final evaluation is 6 grades from A to F, and the safety index of A grade is the highest. Evaluation indicators such as: the responsiveness of hospital staff, that is, how long it takes for a patient to get help after a request; the risk of leftovers in the patient’s body after surgery, such as foreign objects such as sponges or tools. Includes military or veterans hospitals, acute care hospitals, specialty hospitals, children’s hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, etc. are not currently rated.
Risks for three infections soared in this year’s spring report, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), central catheter-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI), and catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI). Compared with the pre-COVID outbreak, the infection rate of CLABSI increased by 60%, the infection rate of MRSA increased by 37%, and the infection rate of CAUTI increased by 19%.
Find a safe hospital
Hospitals are busy and complex places, with many talented and dedicated healthcare professionals doing excellent work, but everyone can make mistakes. Even a small mistake by the best doctor or nurse can have big consequences. A strong medical team and coordination between each other can reduce the occurrence of errors and harm to patients.
According to the website of Leapfrog Group, more than 1 million patients in the United States receive the wrong medicine or take the wrong dosage in the hospital every year, and 1 in every 25 patients may have an infection that should not have occurred during the hospitalization. More than 400,000 people died from hospital safety problems. According to a report by Johns Hopkins University, more than 250,000 people die each year from medical errors.
The safety hazard of drug mix-ups in some hospitals has made preventable errors, and the resulting infections, the third leading cause of death in the United States after heart disease and cancer. According to the Journal of Patient Safety, preventable adverse hospital care-associated events (PAEs) account for one-sixth of all deaths in the United States each year.
Even hospitals of the same level have different hidden dangers, and you can pay attention to the following three things to improve safety. First, ask your relatives or friends to help you in or out of the hospital, you may not feel well, and your relatives and friends can help you ask, provide information, and intervene if problems arise. Second, stay vigilant during hospitalization, make records and track what happens, such as whether hygiene standards are met. Third, know the medicines you are taking, check that they are given to you, and remember that you are an important part of the treatment team.
If you see an error or find a problem, you should speak to a nurse or doctor immediately and follow up on your reported problem; you can also contact hospital customer service or submit it through the hospital’s established error reporting system. If you don’t report it, the problem won’t be fixed.
