As reported by Tech Explorist, helium-3 gas is believed to have formed shortly after the Big Bang and was obtained from the solar nebula when the Earth was formed.
Recent studies show that the Earth’s core leaking Helium-3 in the Earth’s core adds to evidence that the Earth formed inside the Solar Nebula, which has long been debated.
It is also mentioned that the Earth’s core layer is a significant source of helium-3.
As a planet grows, it gathers material from around it, so its composition reflects the environment in which it formed.
To obtain high concentrations of helium-3 in the inner core, Earth had to have formed within the expanding Solar Nebula, not on the periphery or during its waning phase.
This study, adding further clues to the mystery surrounding Earth’s formation, provides additional evidence to the theory that this planet formed within the solar nebula.
The study’s lead author, Peter Olson, a geophysicist at the University of New Mexico, said about 2 kg of helium-3 leaks out of Earth each year.
