Leaked AIDA64 Cache and Memory Benchmark Test Results for Intel Core Ultra 9 185H Raise Concerns About Meteor Lake Performance

Leaker HXL has published a screenshot from the AIDA64 Cache & Memory Benchmark test, which shows the latencies and throughputs of the processor cache and operational memories of the Core Ultra 9 185H, which is the most powerful model of the series Meteor Lake.

However, the results are quite surprising – especially the L3 cache and memory access do not look good. Some values are roughly 3x worse than the current one Raptor Lake / Core i9-13900K:

Meteor Lake
Core Ultra 9 185HRaptor Lake
Core i9-13900KrozdílL3 read586,48 GB/s1821,6 GB/s-68 %L3 write302.91 GB/s636.43 GB/s-52%L3 copy372.09 GB/s1000.3 GB/s-63%L3 latency49,0 ns16,7 ns+193 %RAM read85,52 GB/s94,43 GB/s-9 %RAM write75.27GB/s88.46GB/s-15%RAM copy93.49GB/s88.84GB/s+5%RAM latency133.4 ns73.1 ns+82 %

The read and copy speed of L3 cache is about a third, the write speed about half and the latency three times. The differences in memories need to be taken with a grain of salt, as this is a comparison of LPDDR5X and DDR5, with the former optimized more for throughput, the latter more for latency. However, this does not apply to the situation with the L3 cache, which is not affected by memory. The explanation cannot be found even in the tiled construction Meteor Lakebecause the L3 cache is located on the same piece of silicon as the cores, so communication within one monolithic piece of silicon is tested.

HXL warns that this may be because the software is not for Meteor Lake optimized, but according to the screenshot it is version 7.00, which at least according to the manufacturer of the test Meteor Lake supports (initial support Meteor Lake it came with v6.60 in December 2021, extended support with v6.90 in July 2023 and the current v7.00 already only mentions AVX2 test tuning).

For now, it will be better to wait whether Intel or FinalWire (the maker of AIDA64) after the release Meteor Lake he does not comment on the situation. However, if the situation were to be confirmed and the latency/throughput remained at these values, it would at least explain why, after earlier reports of a significant increase in IPC at Meteor Lake in the end, neither the IPC nor the performance moved significantly. Let’s recall that the former Windows 11 bug in 2021, which increased the latency of Ryzens, caused a roughly 15% drop in game performance.
