The poetry slammer is probably the most prominent nurse in Germany. Now she has left her job. In an interview with Pflege-online what this means for you and those around you
At the nursing congress in Vienna in mid-October, Leah Weigand once again moved her audience. The 26-year-old poetry slammer and former nurse (that’s what she calls herself) read her (partially new) text about nursing at the opening event – and received applause like a rock star. The text is part of her first collection of poems, which will be published next spring. We asked Leah Weigand, with whom we spoke at length in the summer, three questions about her new living situation.
nursing-online: You have now said goodbye to the nursing profession. As a medical student, how do you currently view the nursing situation?
Leah Weigand: My view of the nursing situation has not changed as a result of my studies. I still see nursing as a wonderful profession that – to my great regret – is currently overshadowed by its conditions. I hope that all nurses can practice their profession the way they would like to, namely with dignity and humanity.
How does the change of role feel when you talk about your training profession at the nursing conference and elsewhere?
Job portal Pflege-online.de recommends:
In fact, I sometimes feel guilty because I chose to study medicine and am no longer working in nursing. But I actually don’t want it. Sometimes I hear sentences like “So you’ve changed sides.” I think this attitude leads us in the wrong direction. Doctors and nurses are on the same side. I’m still on the team, albeit in a slightly different role.
What’s next for art as a part-time job, writing and performing?
I have two passions: medicine and writing. Both will always play a role in my life and I don’t want to miss any of them. Sometimes it’s difficult to balance both and it’s a balancing act for me, but at the same time they complement each other well and give me the balance I need.
